Rugged Bear, the children’s apparel company, has filed for Chapter 11 protection. The company consists of 32 chain stores in the U.S.

The Rugged Bear Co.’s hardy name apparently doesn’t reflect its balance sheet.

The Norwood-based regional chain of 32 children’s clothing stores — including 14 in Massachusetts — filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection yesterday.

The 31-year-old company, acquired by a new owner a year ago, has $10 million to $50 million in debt and assets in the same range, court documents state.

A source close to the chain, who didn’t want to be identified, said the struggling retailer plans to close underperforming stores and reorganize around a core group of profitable ones.

Boston brokerage Detwiler Fenton Group bought the Rugged Bear last year, saying it would propel it to the “next level” and expand in the Northeast and eventually other regions. The chain, which operates in New England, New York and New Jersey, opened about eight new stores since its acquisition, including in Burlington, Hingham and Mashpee.
